International Exposure German Events and Celebrations The best way of dealing with money is through the use of traveler’s cheques. You can go changing these as you need money. Another option is finding businesses that offer safety deposit boxes and security services. Working while you study in Germany Earning money alongside studying is a way of life for many students in Germany. Students from the European Union and the EEA stand practically on equal terms with German students and have free access to the German job market. However, for students who do not come from the EU or EEA countries, work is restricted; you are only allowed to work 90 full or 180 half days in a year. To do this you do not need authorization from the Employment Agency, i.e. the German authorities. WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR A DEGREE PROGRAM IN A GERMAN UNIVERSITY? The most famous German festival is undoubtedly the legendary Oktoberfest from Munich, but Carnival and the Christmas holidays are among the most highly regarded in Germany. There are also a large number of music festivals, from opera to open-air jazz and rock concerts.
Health in Germany
The medical care service in Germany is extremely good and has excellent facilities and medical professionals. For more comfort and safety, private clinics are an alternative option, however, a rather more costly one. The best thing to do in this case is take out health insurance, which will allow students to benefit from medical services free of charge in most cases. Every student should join a health plan. It is actually a prerequisite in order to sign up at a German university. If the applicant has a similar health plan in his or her home country, it may be acknowledged in Germany. Evidence of membership to a health plan is obtained through the E109 or E111 form, which is issued in the home country and is acknowledged by other health insurance organizations which also issue an insurance certificate. If students are unable to come by adequate health insurance, they must join a health insurance plan in Germany. The only exceptions to this rule include Studienkolleg students, those taking part in a language course for German as a foreign language (DAF) and students over the age of 30 years, who are not covered by such a plan, nor are these rules applicable to them.
Safety in Germany
Violent crime is rare in Germany, although incidents may occur, especially in high risk areas in large cities as well as in and around train stations. For a quiet, trouble free stay it may be a good idea to follow some basic rules:
Don’t leave luggage in an unwatched car. Take out a traveler’s insurance policy to cover any losses from robbery or misplacement.
All overseas students have the possibility of working during their university studies in Germany.
Overseas students who come to Germany on a student visa may work for 90 whole days or 180 half-days per year, even during the language course preparing for university studies. This is equivalent to
approximately 20 hours per week.
After successful completion of your full-time university studies in Germany, you are, as an overseas academic, entitled to remain in Germany for one year after graduation in order to look for regular employment in a German company.
Furthermore, after three years it is possible to apply for a long-term residence permit if the employer
specifically advocates the same and the employee is also in agreement.
IT DEPENDS ON THE COUNTRY WHERE YOU OBTAINED YOUR SCHOOL-LEAVING DIPLOMA. FOR SOME COUNTRIES IT IS ENOUGH TO HAVE A SCHOOL LEAVING DIPLOMA TO START STUDYING DIRECTLY IN GERMANY. FOR SOME COUNTRIES YOU NEED TO JOIN THE “STUDIENKOLLEG” BEFORE YOU CAN STARTING STUDYING IN GERMANY.
WHAT IS STUDIENKOLLEG EXACTLY?
THE STUDIENKOLLEG IS A PREPARATION COURSE WHICH YOU HAVE TO JOIN IF YOUR SCHOOL LEAVING DIPLOMA IS NOT EQUIVALENT TO THE GERMAN SCHOOL LEAVING DIPLOMA.
IF YOUR SCHOOL LEAVING DIPLOMA OR YOUR ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION IS EQUIVALENT TO A GERMAN SCHOOL LEAVING DIPLOMA. IN SOME CASES YOU NEED FURTHER QUALIFICATIONS. THIS COULD BE LANGUAGE SKILLS OR JOB EXPERIENCE. FURTHER YOU SOMETIMES NEED MORE DOCUMENTS FOR EXAMPLE A LETTER OF MOTIVATION OR A RECOMMENDATION LETTER. USUALLY THE FURTHER QUALIFICATIONS ARE SET BY THE UNIVERSITY.
WHY DO I NEED AN ENTRY TEST TO BE ADMITTED?
SOME UNIVERSITIES WANT TO KNOW IF YOU FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CHOSEN STUDY PROGRAM. FOR EXAMPLE THEY WANT TO TEST IF YOUR MATHEMATICS
KNOWLEDGE IS ENOUGH TO STUDY MATHEMATICS.
THERE ARE NO RESTRICTIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN CHOOSING STUDY
PROGRAMS. AS FAR AS I KNOW YOU CAN APPLY FOR EVERY STUDY PROGRAM OFFERED BY THE UNIVERSITY.
I HAVE COMPLETED THE EQUIVALENT OF AN ABITUR IN MY COUNTRY. HOWEVER, I HAVE ALSO DONE ONE SEMESTER OF UNIVERSITY. IS IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO APPLY SIMPLY BY
SENDING IN AN OFFICIAL REPORT CARD FROM MY UNIVERSITY INSTEAD OF MY
COMPLETION OF SECONDARY STUDIES?
YOU USUALLY HAVE TO SEND YOUR SCHOOL LEAVING DIPLOMA TOGETHER WITH YOUR
TRANSCRIPTS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE REPORT CARD IS NOT SUFFICIENT. BUT IF YOUR
SCHOOL LEAVING DIPLOMA IS EQUIVALENT TO THE GERMAN SCHOOL LEAVING
DIPLOMA, IT IS NOT NECCESSARY TO SEND YOUR STUDY TRANSCRIPT. WE ONLY NEED YOUR SCHOOL LEAVING DIPLOMA.
